Ulen Museum:
Our 10th Anniversary
The Ulen Historical Society celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Ulen Museum during Turkey Barbecue weekend, August 18 and 19 in 2017. Celebration activities included door prizes, wood carving demonstrations, entertainment, and more.
Since opening in 2007, Ulen Museum has hosted traveling exhibits from the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) including “Electrifying Minnesota” and “Minnesota Disasters”. In 2018, the Ulen Museum hosted the MHS’s exhibit, “Coming of Age: The 1969 Generation”. The Ulen Historical Society has welcomed authors and held book signings with Lauraine Snelling (Red River and Blessing series) and Heidi Haagenson (The Tenney Quilt). The Ulen Museum has become a favorite destination for visiting families, school field trips, tour groups from Norway, and history lovers who are tracing their heritage. We look forward to even more special events at the Ulen Museum for many years to come.
A Guest Artist-Historian comes to
Ulen-Hitterdal High School
On Tuesday, January 30, 2018, artist and local historian, Steve Stark gave students at Ulen-Hitterdal a glimpse of the area's past in a fascinating presentation at the school. He tells about important events from the history of the Red River Valley and creates a mural as he talks. At the end of the presentation, a beautiful mural has been created with facts about our area's history.
The Ulen Historical Society worked with Therese Vogel, UH Community Ed. Director to bring Steve Start to Ulen. Therese wrote a grant to cover the cost of the presentation. The Ulen Museum brought numerous artifacts to the school for Steve to use in his presentation, such as a butter churn, an old trunk, and a coffee grinder. Photographs of Ulen's founder, Ole Ulen and family were on display. These artrifacts alowed students to get a feel for life in the 1800s.
